CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
It is women's day. I can not but go down memory lane to women who has made impact in our world and challenged other women to become who they are meant to be.
The list is quite limitless.
Women are now political players in Africa. In comparison to where we have been coming from, we now have women leaders, leading countries in Africa, that is actually a plus for us. Women like Joyce Banda of Malawi and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia have led their respective countries with Zeal and shown the world that women can do much better. Its no longer business as usual.
Women have arisen all over the world, our voices are heard loud and clear all around the nooks and cranies of the world.
Joyce Banda and Ellen Johnson's leadership has shown the world that women can lead countries with firm hand, sound mind, fairness, showing true abilities of African women.
Gone are the days , women are limited to the kitchen, to simply take care of the home and not be permitted to be seen, heard or express themselves.
Kudos to the like of Mary slessor - who abolished the killing of twins in Nigeria, The great Queen Amina of Zaria who with vigor and bravely fought for the rule of Justice, Margeret Ekpo, Mrs Ransome Kuti - 1st female to drive a car, a zealous activist, The great Morenmi of Ile ife- Who used her wisdom, knowledge and charm to save the tribe of Ife. The list goes on and on.
Late Mrs Ransome Kuti was a revolutionist whose exploit is rehearsed by those who were close to her or had opportunity of meeting her in person. I can recall vividly a particular story sometimes in the 70s when a rally was ongoing in Abeokuta and Mrs Kuti sat on the hood of a car (just pass a message) while other women chanted some songs along with her. That story was actually recounted by my mother who had a great respect for the late Mrs Kuti.
We can not but commend the fighting spirit of Rosa Parks who stood her ground in America. Mother Theresa whom dedicated her life to servitude. So many lives were touched by her kind gestures and humble personality. Women whose made impact in business, fashion, education, science and Technology etc.
It has been established that behind every successful man there is a woman - a daughter, wife, niece, cousin, grandmother, mother. Behind a great home, city, nation, there is a woman.
A toast to all the women all around the world. HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY.
